Architectural Millwork in the Kitchen

The kitchen is the undeniable heart of most homes, the place where everyone ends up hanging out at parties and where you spend sunny afternoons of homework, cookies, and tales of the day’s adventures with your kids. It’s a great “bang for your buck” choice for a home remodeling project, so many homeowners are choosing to spend their money on the kitchen.

But what sets a beautiful kitchen apart from the rest? It’s all in the details, as you’ll see in these beautiful examples from Better Homes and Gardens.

A beautiful coffered ceiling adds visual interest to this elegant yet welcoming kitchen.

A custom island with unique legs adds storage, while the butler’s pantry features built-in shelving.

Here’s another unique ceiling, this time with a decided French country look. The large island is another fabulous feature, providing not only storage and preparation area, but also a great gathering place for casual meals.

This library-inspired kitchen features a mix of stunning dark wood and bright white cabinetry.

Wainscoting for Every Room

Wainscoting, or paneling only on the bottom three or four feet of wall,  is an incredibly versatile design element to incorporate into any interior. Take a look at some wonderful examples of wainscoting and how it can be used to great effect in many different areas of a home.

Children’s room

Wainscoting adds a beautiful contrast to both of these light, playful children’s rooms. The room above even incorporates a deep ledge which is used to display artwork.

Entryway or foyer

The wainscoting in this entryway, as well as a deep lintel and fluted door frame, adds architectural interest and contrasts nicely with the rich wood banister.

Living Room

Extra-tall, white wainscoting serves nicely as a frame for the hanging items in this comfortably elegant living room, above. Below, robin’s egg blue wainscoting adds a dose of vibrant color and visual texture to the room.

Dining Room

The use of wainscoting in this dining room allows for a bold, graphic wallpaper that would normally be too overwhelming for the space. However, used in such a small area, the look works perfectly.
